All of us accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had been much like you. In the third week, a malaise began to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). This implies that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically continually when the depression embeded in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females went about their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and say that the majority of ladies at house do what I do, chat and stop with the other ladies. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She recently separated from her husband and remains in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never talked to him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
